6/29/2011 The Emerald Ash BorerWhat is that Purple Thing Hanging in the Tree? It's a sticky trap that the United States Department of Agriculture officials and cooperators are using to identify where the invasive pest, Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is located. EAB is currently not known to be in Connecticut. The 2011 CT Emerald Ash Borer Trapping Program.

The window in their home faces west, so they don't get the morning sunshine to stimulate egg production. So, I am awake thinking about this at about 3am this morning. I come downstairs, and look outside, and it is really too dark at 3am to brave going out into the yard all the way to the chicken coop, so I lay down on the couch, expecting to catch up on emails, surf the web and face book, and then, I fall asleep! You probably already guessed that that happened. I awake to the sounds of Charlotte the cat meowing outside the front door, it is a bright 6am, and I have missed my chance to awaken before the chickens. I run (ok, walk slowly, it is early, and I haven't had a cup of coffee yet!) to the chicken coop, and all of the ladies (and 2 gentlemen- yes, we have 2 baby roosters!) are already awake and think that I am going to get them food. They follow me into the chicken coop when I promptly turn on their light, they give me a weird look and then run outside again. I can't win. Perhaps the light will help anyway, but, I am not counting on it! Perhaps tomorrow I won't be a chicken and just go out in the middle of the night!
6/26/2011 Pear TreeOur tiny pear tree has about 10 pears growing on it! I am so excited to see them grow- and can't wait till I can taste them! I just hope some critter doesn't get to them first. Our cherry tree was promising- lots of cherries- then yesterday we noticed that birds must be feasting because there is barely a cherry left! Oh well, they best not touch my pears! The garden is coming along nicely. This was a wonderful weekend to get out and truly see how things are moving along- did some weeding and garden upkeep. Fortunately, once the garden is planted in the spring, there is little more to do than the general upkeep and keeping ahead of bugs and critters. We failed the cherry tree, but we are definitely keeping an eye on our vegetables! Bumper crop of strawberries again this weekend. We are definitely having strawberries and cream for dessert tonight! Some lucky farm stand shoppers also will be enjoying the sweet taste of summer! Can't wait for the blueberries to start ripening! 6/23/2011 Rain, rain and more rain...Broccoli! Can't wait for the harvest to come in! Hopefully we will be able to get out to the garden this weekend, without our slickers, that is! The rain has been quite incredible! We are really looking for the sun this weekend. More pictures to come... everything growing wonderfully with all this rain! 6/21/2011 Our Onion Bed!We are very proud of our onion bed this year. The key: intensive weeding! Again with the weeding- for onions to thrive, the bed must be weeded! Great! More bending over or kneeling to pinch off all of the little weeds before their roots get so entangled with the onions bulbs that when you weed you pull out your baby onion bulb! Mulching with straw helps, but is not 100% weed proof. Good old hand weeding is the only way to go! We can safely say that we will get many more onions this year than last, and hopefully they will be quite a bit larger! Next year, we would like to tackle a garlic bed- we just have to get it together this fall to plant them! Stay tuned for more Vegetable Pics! Thank you to everyone who found something scrumptious to bring home with them from the Farm Stand this weekend! This week, we wanted to share some more pictures about how the garden is progressing. Pictured is our corn stalks- not that many of them, about 20 stalks are growing, but its our first time! We hope we can bring some ears of corn to the Farm Stand later in the season. Below, our braising greens- beautiful, aren't they! Little baby leaves packed with great nutrients! And of course, our mixed salad greens are still growing strong, so we will keep bringing you our delicious salad greens! Enjoy the week! Keep checking out the blog for more pictures of the garden growing! |
