This is our first time crushing wine grapes. This historic weekend is the culmination of three years of classes, research, making many batches of wine from box kits to creating our own wine from fresh juice in the pail. Our first crushing. Now, on to the hard part... Crush DayFermentation 5/13/2011 Chilean Grapes Have Arrived! Our order from Chile is finally here! Ten cases of Malbec in the background and seven cases of Pinot Noir with a combined weight of about three hundred pounds. We will be crushing tomorrow morning minus the very tasty hand fulls I already ate. Table grapes do not hold a candle to wine grapes. The second you bite into a wine grape, your mouth starts to water and you have to try hard not to eat the whole bunch. In short, we will be crushing tomorrow and starting fermentation on Sunday. Then in a week or two we will press the grapes and start clearing the wine and storing it for eight months to a year depending on taste. The three hundred ponds is not enough wine to fill a barrel but it will produce about sixteen gallons or so of finished wine "100 bottles". I will up date the post as we make progress.
5/2/2011 Big Day for Wine!5/2/2011 A Planting WeekendTeresa and I planted the Kale plants we started this winter in the garden this Saturday. Yes, they are very close together we planted a additional 5 plants in what would be normally 4 plant spacing. Come June we will harvest the additional 5 plants and allow the 4 correctly spaced plants to fill out. Sunday morning the Onion sets went in and with only 14 days to the last frost date we are working hard to get the beds ready for the veg. This time of year just flies, you don't notice the date until it's the 4th of July. Any ways here are some pics.
